Some Gauteng learners yet to be placed at schools

Anxious and frustrated parents are queuing at the Johannesburg central district offices in Pimville, Soweto, to have their children placed in schools.

Some say they did apply on time through Gauteng Education’s Online Admission systems for Grades 1 and 8.

The department says over 300 000 learners have been placed. However, it is yet to indicate how many remain.

Julia Nedzamba, a parent of a Grade 8 learner, says she applied online last year but her child was not placed and is now on the waiting list.

“After he was not placed, I went to the district and asked them if they would rather move me to another district where I could go for a second option and other schools that he preferred. An email was written and my email address was taken, but I haven’t received any email.”

Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane has assured parents that they are working to place learners.

“ We are liaising with parents that where we are placing your children, we are going to invest, and they will get good quality education irrespective of where. Fortunately, we just got the matric announcement and one of our best, the best school in the province is a township school, Lufhereng, 100% pass rate, and 97% Bachelor’s pass. It fared better than the Model C schools that they want in suburbs.”
