Some Ad Hoc Committee members call for Mkhwanazi to apologise to Cele

Some members of Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee want KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi to put his retraction of some allegations against former Police minister Bheki Cele in writing.

They also want Mkhwanazi to offer a public apology to Cele.

This after the evidence leader – Advocate Norman Arendse – read out a message from Mkhwanazi withdrawing his allegation that Cele received money from criminal suspect businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala.

The message also contained Mkhwanazi’s apology to the former minister but African National Congress (ANC) Chief Whip Mdumiseni Ntuli says the message that was read out is not good enough.

“Withdrawing is very important because we were told in these hearings or this committee that there are people who have the capacity to design and send the messages on behalf of your number without you understanding or getting involved on that. Now the matter that we are dealing with now is serious,” says Ntuli.

“I am of the view that it should not be just withdrawn as other colleagues have said so by merely sending an SMS. I think we need something officially and properly written that must be publicly communicated not in a way that has been made available,” he adds.

Cele told the Ad Hoc Committee he has no business with Matlala.
