FILE | Burning tyres during a protest
The Sol Plaatje Municipality in Northern Cape says it is committed to addressing the concerns of protesting residents.
The response follows the barricading of roads by residents from a number of informal settlements in Kimberley who burned tyres and used rocks to close off roads.
Residents are complaining about sewage spillages and high electricity tariffs.
Municipal Manager Thapelo Matlala says they will set up a task team to work with the community.
“We need to change the pipes here they are 110 diameter pipelines. They are too small to manage the sewerage in these areas, so my team is here but that will just be a temporary relief.
What I will be doing out of the discussions we have had with the residents here is that I am going to set up a specialised team to come and deal with the matters here.
The issues here are quite disturbing I must say and as a municipality we have a responsibility to attend to these problems.”
