Protecting the lives of brave whistleblowers and identifying, arresting and prosecuting the masterminds behind their assassinations remains a priority.

That’s according to EXCO member of civil society group, Active Citizens Movement (ACM), Ashok Chandika.

The group gathered yesterday at the 1860 Heritage Centre in Durban to commemorate International Anti-Corruption Day which is being observed today.

The placard demonstration and meeting were commemorated under the theme “Babita’s Long Walk for Justice” following the killing of whistleblower Babita Deokaran in 2021.

Chandika says this year’s commemoration is a crucial step towards advocating for transparency, accountability and good governance in SA.

“The most important part of our program is the commemoration of international anti-corruption day and we have chosen to highlight whistleblowers and what they do and the consequences they have faced exposing corruption. Babita Deokaran is being highlighted because she is the whistleblower that has captured the imagination of all by exposing corruption at the Tembisa Hospital where she was the financial officer.”
