The family of the slain KwaZulu-Natal Chairperson of the African Farmers Association of South Africa (AFASA) Mbongeni Sikhakhane is calling for justice.
He was attacked at his home in Sweetwaters, in Pietermaritzburg, on Friday.
It is alleged that five armed men stormed his house, shot Sikhakhane and demanded money as well as his firearm from his wife.
The family says the suspects then proceeded to his shop where one of his daughters was present. She had already locked herself inside and the suspects could not enter.
Sikhakhane’s daughter Amahle says, “They just shot my dad, didn’t even give him time to explain, they didn’t even give him time to attack back. They just shot him and he fell down. We do want justice because he was a community Man.”
She says, “He was not only a family man but he loved his community. So I think not only do we deserve justice, the entire community. He also worked hand-in-hand with iNkosi YakwaMpumuza Zondi . So I think we all hurt as a community , as the Mpumuza Clan. All demand and once justice for my father.”
Shisanyamas
AFASA says they still believe the high demand from some informal meat markets like shisanyamas could also be attributed to the increase in stock theft.
The association says black farmers in rural parts KwaZulu-Natal continue to be soft targets for criminals as police struggle to deal with stock-theft.
The Association’s Secretary Donatusi Dlamini says, “We’ve been talking about this for a very long time and what we are noticing now, they’re not just selling our cows but they are slaughtering them and selling them to uncontrolled shisanyamas .”
Dlamini adds, “We used to say government must look at who is opening these Shisanyama and where did they get this meat because this meat is from our cattles. We have been talking about this many times. People here are unemployed so they see animals as a business and they end up stealing our livestock slaughtering it and selling it, and also people are not working and therefore it’s become too high the stock.”
