‘Sizwe Kupelo does not possess a legitimate matric certificate’

Director of Communications in the Eastern Cape Health Department, Siyanda Manana, says he got the confirmation from the Council for Quality Assurance in General and Further Education and Training in South Africa, Umalusi, that his Deputy Director, Sizwe Kupelo, does not possess a legitimate matric certificate.

The trial against Kupelo commenced on Wednesday in the East London Specialized Crimes Court.

He is accused of forging his matric certificate when he applied for his current job at the department in 2002 and is currently out on a R30,000 bail.

Manana says he started investigating Kupelo’s qualifications after he received a tip-off that he does not have a valid matric certificate.

“I handed the letter to the Department of Education. They sent it through to Malusi, it came back, and it said the certificate did not belong to the accused. It was not the certificate that was genuine. It belonged to Mr Cinga Dantyi. I then asked where is Mr. Kupelo’s certificate. They then gave me a statement of symbols of his standard 10 results. The statement is Xhosa first language E, English second language E, Biology H, History D, the other two subjects are not listed,” says Manana.
