Unlicensed firearms and ammunition confiscated from suspected illegal miners in Riverlea.
Six suspected illegal miners have been arrested in Riverlea, south of Johannesburg, following a shootout with police.
Police have also recovered unlicensed firearms and ammunition as well as illegal mining equipment.
Gauteng police spokesperson Mavela Masondo says the suspects face charges of attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
“While confiscating the tools, the suspects started shooting at the police and the shootout ensued. Police arrested two suspects who were found in possession of two firearms, a rifle and pistol, and magazines loaded with ammunition. Four more suspects were arrested in the vicinity. Further investigation revealed that all the suspects are illegal in the country.”
