SIU returns R1.7 billion to NSFAS

The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has returned R1.7 billion to the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS).

The SIU says more than R120 million was recovered from parents of unqualified beneficiaries.

NSFAS has urged parents whose children have received funding but do not qualify, to contact the SIU to make arrangements as the investigations are continuing.

Most of the funds claimed are from institutions of higher learning from allocated NSFAS funds.

The University of Pretoria and Wits University received the lion’s share of unallocated funds.

The retention of funds by institutions of higher learning for more than one-year has been blamed on inadequate control systems by NSFAS.
