Simbine comfortably won heat seven in 10.02 seconds
Sprinters Akani Simbine and Gift Leotlela proudly flew the South African flag on the opening night of the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.
Both qualified for Sunday’s semifinals of the 100 metres.
27-year-old Leotlela from Phuthaditjhaba upstaged his vastly more experienced countryman, winning his heat in a personal best time of 9.87 seconds.
It was the fastest qualifying time in the fastest of the seven heats. The first three athletes all crossed in under 10 seconds in heat one.
Simbine comfortably won heat seven in 10.02 seconds to also advance to the semifinals.
