Sibiya pleads ignorance on whether Steve Motsumi is dangerous or not

Suspended Deputy National Police Commissioner for Crime Detection, Lieutenant-General Shadrack Sibiya, has told the Madlanga Commission that he does not know why businessman and taxi boss Steve Motsumi has been referred to as a dangerous man.

During KwaZulu-Natal Hawks head Major General Lesetja Senona’s testimony, Commission chairperson Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga ruled that Motsumi’s name could be mentioned publicly at the Commission.

General Sibiya has been linked to Motsumi through alleged middleman Sergeant Fannie Nkosi.

Evidence leader Advocate Adila Hassim asked Sibiya: “Do you have any idea why that would be the case? Is Mr Mutsumi a dangerous person?”

General Sibiya: “I really don’t know.”

Hassim: “Okay, all right. I’ll leave it at that. I just wanted to put it to you that this seems to be somebody who causes some discomfort and fear. It was a very clear request from General Senona, [during his testimony, he said] please don’t make me mention that name. And it actually took a ruling from the chair for General Senona.”

Meanwhile, Sibiya testified that he did not know that businessman Stuart Scharnick had a history of conflict with the law.

Scharnick, who acted as Sibiya’s bodyguard, made headlines at the Commission last year, after Crime Intelligence Head General Dumisani Khumalo revealed that he had 34 criminal charges, with 18 resulting in convictions.

Sibiya has defended his relationship with Scharnick to Commissioner Sandile Khumalo.

“So I’m just saying it’s normal. You don’t investigate a person criminally when you meet him the first time. I don’t know if Commissioner Khumalo will meet me and then before we begin to acquaint myself, then you will [investigate me],” explains Sibiya.

A new witness takes the stand at the Commission on Wednesday.
