ANC Women’s League memorial service for Isithwalandwe Gertrude Ntiti Shope.
Former National Assembly Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula has paid tribute to the late uMkhonto operative, diplomat, trade unionist, teacher and African National Congress stalwart Gertrude Shope at her memorial service in Irene, Centurion.
Mapisa-Nqakula says Shope’s legacy will live on through the women of the ANC.
“It is you women who will bring back and restore the dignity of the African National Congress. It is you women, it is us, it is us who will bring back and restore the dignity of the African National Congress,” says Mapisa-Nqakula.

Meanwhile, ANC Secretary- General Fikile Mbalula says Shope was the mother of the nation and will be remembered as a beacon of resilience.
“She was bestowed the highest honor awarded by the African National Congress to those who have made an outstanding contribution and sacrifice to the liberation struggle. Her name will be forever etched in the annals of history for the profound impact she made in the struggle for justice, equality, and the liberation of our people. ”
