Shivambu says no true freedom without basic services for all

UMkhonto Wesizwe (MK) party secretary general Floyd Shivambu says South Africa should not be proudly celebrating Freedom Day while the majority of its citizens are without essential basic services.

Shivambu has been addressing party members during a mini rally in Mdantsane, Eastern Cape. Members of the African Transformation Movement are part of the gathering.

Shivambu says the country needs economic freedom. “Today, we are taking a moment to mark the 31st anniversary of South Africa’s first all-inclusive elections. But the freedom we are celebrating means little when the majority of our people still do not have access to something as basic as water. What is this freedom without basic services and access to water?” says Shivambu.

Meanwhile, the party says it has intentionally taken a stance not to be drawn into the reversal of Value Added Tax (VAT) debate. Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana has submitted documents in which it is indicated that the VAT remains at 15%.

Shivambu says the party supports the view of most South Africans.

“We are not going to be involved in whether VAT must increase or not because we know that the majority of South Africans say it must not increase. We know that we represent the majority; we are a party and the movement of the majority.”
