Shivambu calls for Commission of Inquiry into Black Poverty

Leader of the Mayibuye Africa Party Floyd Shivambu has called for the establishment of a Commission of Inquiry into Black Poverty.

He was addressing party members in Midrand, north of Johannesburg, at a public engagement to give a progress report on the fledgling party’s progress to build itself.

The party which says its mission is to achieve “Total Freedom and Emancipation Now” champions issues such as land redistribution, industrialisation, decolonised education and respect for traditional leadership amongst others.

Shivambu says that there is a need for South Africa to focus on development rather than what he refers to a palace politics.

“Let’s talk about this, let’s get the submissions. The last time there was an attempt to do so was the attempt to develop the Reconstruction and Development Plan which was deeply consultative and involved civil society submissions and community participation. We are calling for an organic and systematic systemic inquiry into the black poverty question so we can collectively and stop focusing on palace politics that do not change the price of bread.”

Shivambu has also called for the South African government to champion the agenda of the African continent during its Presidency of the G20. The country will be hosting the event this month which sees some of the most powerful nations in the world gather to resolve issues facing the globe.

“We think that South Africa should use this 12-month presidency of the G20 to call for a global end to illicit financial flows and resources theft which largely affect the African continent. South Africa must call for the end to destabilization of African countries especially the DRC, South Sudan, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. South Africa must call for the long overdue reconfiguration of global multinational institutions such as the Bank IMF and the World Trade Organisation,” says Shivambu.
