Seven lives lost on Mpumalanga roads since Thursday

At least seven fatalities have been recorded in Mpumalanga following different crashes, since Thursday. Three of them, a woman and two children who were pedestrians, were hit by a vehicle on the N4 toll near Belfast, on Friday. Safety, Security, and Liaison spokesperson Moeti Mmusi says so far the number of fatalities is much lower than last year.

He has called on motorists to continue driving with caution as traffic volumes are expected to increase again soon.

“We haven’t had any major crashes so far as compared to last year this time. Safe to say we have recorded one major crash, the one that occurred on the N4 road towards Belfast, whereby three pedestrians lost their lives after they were struck by a vehicle. Other than that, we have had several incidences where there were single crashes recorded. For instance, the one at Manila and on the N4 as well, there was a sedan that crashed into the rear of the articulated truck,’ says Mmusi.

Meanwhile, Mpumalanga police spokesperson, Mavela Masondo says the police will continue to be visible and conduct safety operations in the province.

“The intensified police visibility is continuing in Mpumalanga this Easter Weekend as police are ensuring the safety of the residents and visitors in the province. The roadblocks are conducted on National, Regional and other main roads to check for illicit goods, illegal activities, reckless and negligent driving and to curb drunken driving that contributes to road fatalities,” says Masondo.
