Serious crimes in Gauteng have reduced by 6.5% in the 3rd quarter of the 2024/25 financial year. This was announced by Gauteng Police Commissioner, Tommy Mthombeni, earlier today.

Mthombeni was addressing the Gauteng Provincial Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Community Safety, focusing on crime trends between October and December 2024.

This period is often characterised by a spike in criminal activities due to the festive season.

Mthombeni says as compared to the same period the previous year, there has been a decrease of more than 7 000  serious crimes in the province.

“The overall crime in Gauteng of which we are counting for the 17 communities who reported serious crimes, we had a reduction overall in Gauteng by 6.5 %. Of which it is translating to minus 7 563 counts.”
