Senzo Mchunu showed interest in ANC councillor killing case: Gopaul

KwaZulu-Natal Acting Deputy Police Commissioner Anthony Gopaul has detailed how Police Minister Senzo Mchunu called him showing interest in a case that involved the killing of an African National Congress councillor Phendukani Mabhida.

Gopaul is testifying before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry which has resumed its hearings in Pretoria.

Mabhida was shot dead at his home in KwaSithebe in February 2025.

Gopaul says Mchunu questioned why the Political Killings Task Team was investigating Mabhida’s killing.

“So I did tell him that that is the team that’s investigating it. And the minister then asked me, but why are they investigating the case? I had instructed that these cases be investigated at the police station where the crime takes place. And understanding why, in my own way, I tried to explain to the minister that when it comes to the political killings, the team that is investigating these kind of murders are better equipped and trained to understand the modus operandi of how these murders take place, who are the normal hitmen that are contracted.”
