Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala testifying at the at Kgoši Mampuru Correctional Facility in Pretoria.
The Madlanga Commissioner, Advocate Sesi Baloyi, has put it to KwaZulu-Natal Hawks head Lesetja Senona, that there was a conflict of interest when he encouraged Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala to seek legal advice over his multi-million rand cancelled SAPS contract.
Senona has admitted before the Commission that he encouraged Matlala to seek legal guidance after his R360 million SAPS tender was cancelled due to irregularities.
However, Senona defended his stance, stating that he did not believe his advice to Matlala would constitute a conflict of interest.
General Senona: “It is a common cause that somewhere in our line of duty, people will come and seek advice.”
Commissioner Baloyi: “No, no, no, no, General. No, I have to stop you. I’ve asked you a direct question. Please answer my question. Don’t tell me what happens in life in general. I’ve asked you a specific direct question. As you sit there, do you or do you not accept that this e-mail exchange that I have raised with you on its face, suggests that you had a conflict of interest between your friend’s business and your employer’s business?”
General Senona: “I don’t see it as a conflict of interest.”
