Security measures at border posts beefed up ahead of G20 Summit: BMA

Border Management Authority says they have intensified security measures at border posts to ensure safety of delegates and visitors.

This as the country is days away from hosting the G20 Leaders’ Summit.

Speaking at the BMA conference at the CSIR in Pretoria, Commissioner Michael Masiapato said technology has been used to mitigate fraudulent activities by criminals.

Key policymakers, law enforcement heads, defence and intelligence experts and development partners from across the Southern African region, discussed the future of border governance, migration management and regional integration.

Focusing on the upcoming G20 BMA Commissioner, Michael Masiapato says only selected border points will allow delegates entry for the G20 Leaders’ Summit.

“So, up to this point I can indicate that four areas have been identified as the areas where we are going to see a lot of people going to into the G20. OR Tambo International Airport will be the busiest and we are prepared for that.”

The BMA says they have roped in their colleagues from the National Joint Operational (NATJOINTS) and Intelligence Structure to ensure smooth operations for the two-day presidential summit.

BMA Commissioner, Michael Masiapato says, “In terms of the G20, we can indicate that, as the Border Management Authority, we are part of the NATJOINTS that is actually responsible for the management of the security around the entire G20 summit process.”

Marketing Communications Director at Milkor, Daniel Du Plessis, says while the Border Management Authority has made progress in preparing for the G20 summit, more work is needed to integrate advanced technologies in the future.

“In terms of the BMA responsibility for processing these people, these are future technologies that we still have to integrate. They have done some good work in the preparation of the G20 but there is a lot more that we still need to do.”

The G20 Leaders’ Summit will run from the 22nd to the 23rd of November.
