Security beefed up outside Eskom offices in Soweto as deadline nears

Security has been beefed up outside various Eskom offices in Soweto. This after reports of some criminal syndicates allegedly selling electricity tokens to customers queuing outside Eskom office to have their metres re-configured ahead of tonight’s deadline.

There are also reports of people claiming to be Eskom officials and offering to register metres for customers at a fee.

Eskom Deadline | Metre upgrade deadline tonight:

Johannesburg Metro Police and the Gauteng Crime Wardens are patrolling the vicinity.

Eskom Spokesperson, Amanda Qithi says, “I have not heard of any, but if they are here we would alert our protective services colleagues so that they can do their intelligence. And if they do find out that there are those individuals they will deal with it from their side.”

Prepaid Metres | Limpopo residents race against time to meet Eskom’s recoding deadline:

Meanwhile, the Mangaung Metro-based power utility, Centlec, has advised residents not to use the Eskom-provided contact number to check whether their metre boxes have been recoded.

The utility says it uses a different system and metre boxes.

Centlec Spokesperson Lele Mamatu says the number to use to check the upgrade in Mangaung is #005#.

Mamatu says the Eskom provided number gives an error code in some instances.

“That Eskom number is not applicable to Centlec metres. So, it will not definitely give expected outcome as a result of that. Centlec has its own coding system that its using for customer to be able to check their meters but as I have said the #005# number, when you do the testing on it, it will still give you krn1, but it does not mean the customer is not upgraded. It updated in terms of the metre.”

Eskom has given prepaid customers 20:15 (quarter-past eight) tonight as the deadline for upgrading their electricity meters, failing which they will not be able to recharge.

The power utility says most prepaid electricity customers had re-coded their meters by June, 2024.

Eskom has given reprieve to zero-buyers who will re-code their meters without penalties, and says these customers can still go to their legal vending sites with their meter numbers to buy electricity.

Vending agents will then issue them with their Key Change Tokens to make their meters KRN2 compliant.
