Second swimmer found off KZN’s Pennington beach


The second body of a group of five swimmers who were swept to sea at the beach, at Pennington on the KwaZulu-Natal south coast, has been recovered.

Police rescue teams, the national sea rescue institute and lifeguards recovered one body on Thursday.

Samantha Meyrick from IPSS Medical Rescue says, “On Thursday evening, IPSS Medical Rescue, National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) and lifeguards responded to Pennington main beach, where five swimmers were swept out to sea. By the end of Thursday night, one person had been successfully rescued and two bodies recovered. Two people remain missing. SAPS search and rescue, lifeguards and the NSRI will return to the beach on Friday morning to continue the search.”

Meyrick says rescuers and medical personnel have also been called out to Thompson’s Bay on the north coast. This after reports of a swimmer in distress.
