North West Public safety MEC, Wessels Morweng says the issue of illegal mining remains a concern. Areas such as Tlhatlhaganyane and Masebudile villages are engulfed by illegal mining.
Morweng called on police to intensify their operations in these areas. He said this during the launch of the Safer Festive Season Operation held in Kanana Township near Klerksdorp in the North West yesterday.
“It cannot be business as usual that the land of our fore fathers is taken over by criminals, they come and do as they please. We are losing billions as far as criminal activity is concerned and as the North West we are seated at number one as far as the issue of unemployment is concerned. Imagine if we can take those billions and re-invest them back into our economy, how many jobs are we going to create. The plan shall be developed and is shall be executed so that the issue of illegal mining shall be a thing of the past.”
