SCOPA concerned about ‘critical state’ of RAF

Parliament’s Standing Committee on Public Accounts (SCOPA) has raised concerns about the critical state of the Road Accident Fund (RAF), following the fund’s Chief Executive Officer Collins Letsoalo being placed on special leave.

This as the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) continues its investigations into alleged tender irregularities, duplicate claims and payments made to attorneys and claimants.

Letsoalo was placed on precautionary leave last week for refusing to appear before SCOPA and for interfering with investigations.

SCOPA Chairperson Songezo Zibi says the RAF Board must held accountable.

“The SIU told us that their investigation was being interfered with. And I asked the minister to make sure that interference stops. The second thing that they told us was that there was at least one law firm that was syphoning money into the pockets of the executives. We have asked the minister to make sure that this practice does not continue anymore. So, it is just tale, after tale where we do not get the response that we should get from the minister. However, having said that it would appear now that things are beginning to move in the right direction I would hope,” says Zibi.

SCOPA says the fund has accumulated over R4-billion in default judgments while failing to appoint either a head of legal services or Chief Claims Officer.
