Scholar transporters call for separate regulation from taxis

The South African Scholar Transporters Association (Sasta) has pleaded with the KwaZulu-Natal Transport Department to intervene in the extortion and victimisation incidents that scholar transport associations are facing.

The association revealed that a KwaZulu-Natal taxi association is allegedly demanding that each vehicle in operation must pay a permit fee of R3000.

Sasta General-Secretary Sihle Magubane says that to avoid conflicts between the scholar transport and the taxi industry, government must regulate the scholar transport associations differently from the taxi associations.

Magubane says, “What we want for Government, we want them to regulate us, to allow us to do our own thing as these are two different sectors. Scholar transport is the other sector and the taxi business is another sector. So we want him to regulate us, so that we can look at our own problems.”- Reporting by Sthembile Shabalala.
