World number one golf champion, Scottie Scheffler, has captured his third major title, winning the PGA Championship by five strokes at the Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The 28-year-old American carded an even-par 71 in the final round for a total of 272, 11-under-par, finishing well clear of countrymen Harris English, Bryson De Chambeau and Davis Riley.

It was also Scheffler’s 15th career PGA Tour title.

South African golfer Garrick Higgo’s challenge faded.

Higgo, who was in contention going into the final round, made three double bogeys on his way to a round of nine-over-par 80.

He finished in a tie of 55th on five-over-par for the tournament, one stroke behind Christiaan Bezuidenhout.
