SCA to hear Ramaphosa’s appeal on Zulu King Misuzulu’s recognition

The Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) in Bloemfontein is scheduled to hear an appeal by President Cyril Ramaphosa today and tomorrow.

The appeal challenges a 2023 Pretoria High Court decision that set aside the president’s recognition of King Misuzulu kaZwelithini as the King of the Zulu Nation.

The High Court had ruled that the process followed by the president to recognise MisuZulu as king was flawed. However, it did not set aside the Zulu Royal Family’s identification of Misuzulu as King.

Prince Mbonisi Bhekithemba ka Bhekuzulu and Prince Simakade ka Zwelithini Zulu, among others, had contested the legitimacy of both the identification and recognition processes.

The SCA is also expected to hear a cross-appeal from the challengers, arguing that the court should have gone further and set aside the identification of MisuZulu as the new Zulu King.
