SCA dismisses Home Affairs’ bid to appeal ZEP ruling

1 minute

The Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) has dismissed with costs the Home Affairs Minister’s bid to appeal the interim relief granted to the Zimbabwe Immigration Federation (ZIF).

ZIF represents more than 1 000 holders of the Zimbabwean Exemption Permit (ZEP).

This follows the June 2023 High Court in Pretoria judgment that granted the federation an interim interdict which restrains government respondents from detaining or deporting any holder of a ZEP.

The decision on whether to terminate the permit is before Schreiber after the Helen Suzman Foundation successfully challenged the decision in court.

The ZEP is currently valid until November 28, 2025, in order for him to fulfill the duty placed on him by the High Court to consult the affected ZEP holders and all other stakeholders on the future of the current dispensation.

EDITORIAL NOTE:

Earlier we reported that it was Minister Leon Schreiber’s bid but it was by the Department of Home Affairs before Shreiber became the minister.
