The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has strongly urged the public to take weather warnings seriously to ensure they stay safe.
The weather service has warned of continued rainfall over the festive period and into the New Year.
Briefing the media in Pretoria, forecaster Lehlohonolo Thobela says persistent rainfall is expected to continue across several provinces.
“This is expected over the eastern part, of KwaZulu-Natal when you to talk about the Eastern parts, we include Kuron, the Free State, Gauteng, Mpumalanga as well as parts of the North West. We have several warnings, most of them are for severe thunderstorms, significantly in the Northern parts of Gauteng into the southwestern parts of Mpumalanga.”
“It is a yellow [level 4] warning, which means it’s a low likelihood … which is expected to result in localised flooding and possibilities of damaging winds, as well as the possibility of hail and excessive lightning over those areas,” adds Thobela.
