The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) says a manhunt has been launched for four of its officials who are suspected of defrauding beneficiaries of nearly R260 million.

Earlier today, three other officials believed to be connected to the same syndicate were arrested in Johannesburg.

The suspects allegedly scammed beneficiaries through ghost SASSA cards.

SASSA spokesperson Paseka Letsatsi says more arrests have been made in the Eastern Cape over the past few weeks.

“Three were arrested today however there are four individuals as well, which are known that the South African Police Services is looking for. We don’t know what happened, they might have got the tip off or they might have seen that their colleagues or their friends were being arrested. They committed a crime together and they decided to run. But unfortunately, you cannot run away from the law. They will be caught and I think they will be caught very soon.”
