South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) CEO, Busisiwe Memela-Khambula has been suspended with full pay pending the outcome of the investigation into her appointment.
Social Development Minister, Sisisi Tolashe says the precautionary suspension is to allow for the investigation to proceed without hindrance or interference given Memela-Khambula’s position.
She had been acting CEO since 2018 and was officially appointed in 2019 by then social development minister, Susan Shabangu.
Tolashe says there have been a number of requests by the Office of the Public Protector for her to take action.
Regional Executive Manager for Gauteng Themba Matlou has been appointed as the Acting CEO.
