SA’s Gambling laws need overhaul, says Foundation

The National Gambling Act of 2004 needs to be updated from a digital point of view, to accommodate for the rise in online betting and the advent of social media.

That’s according to the South African Responsible Gambling Foundation (SAGF), who say the laws surrounding gambling are over 20 years old and need to be revised.

Spokesperson Lebogang Seoheng says aggressive marketing and easy access are now influencing youth to take up gambling.

“So, the National Gambling Act of 2004, which was gazetted like 21 years ago, needs to catch up with the digital age and the rise of online betting. So, there is a lot that policy makers, legislator,s and regulators need to do to ensure the laws are on par from where we at from a digital point of view.”
