SA’s Gallagher, Meder fall short at World Aquatics Championships

South African swimmers, Erin Gallagher and Rebecca Meder, failed to qualify for their respective finals at the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore.

Gallagher finished sixth in her 100 meter butterfly semi-final and was 13th fastest overall, while Meder finished seventh in her 200 meter medley semi-final, and 10th overall. Germany’s Lukas Martens bagged the first gold medal in the swimming competition.

He won the men’s 400m freestyle in a time of three minutes, 42.35, just 200 of a second quicker than Australian, Sam Short. Canadian 18-year old, Summer MacIntosh then clinched gold in the women’s 400m freestyle, ahead of China’s Li Bingjie and American great, Katy Ledecky.

The Australian women’s and men’s 4 x 100m freestyle teams both won gold in their events. But the Australian men’s team set a new championship record of three minutes, eight-point-nine-seven seconds. Italy claimed the silver, and the USA the bronze.
