SARS kicks off 2025 tax filing season

The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has official kicked off the 2025 tax filing season.

Provisional and non-provisional taxpayers are expected to start receiving notifications for automatic assessment from today.

The auto assessment is targeted at taxpayers with one or more sources of income from formal and other forms of employment, and uncomplicated tax affairs.

SARS Commissioner Edward Kieswetter says 5,5 million taxpayers have been identified for automatic tax assessment.

“As from today to the 20th, we will release auto assessment messages in batches to taxpayers. We generally priotitise refunds because we know how important this is for taxpayers and how important it is for the economy. Generally, taxpayers are financially distressed and a tax refund offers a welcomed relief. We ask taxpayers not to call us but to go on our website using the Mobi app or online query system or if they have a normal phone they can send an SMS or WhatsApp,” adds Kieswetter.
