Police union SAPU in the Northern Cape says more still needs to be done to reduce incidents of contact crime especially murder and rape in the province.
The union was responding to the release of the fourth quarter crime statistics by Commissioner Koliswa Otola.
Otola says they have recorded an increase in murder and sexual offences including rape.
Provincial SAPU Secretary Sabata Tshabedi says they are still concerned about cases of gender-based violence, kidnappings and rape.
“We therefore urge the government, faith-based organisations, civil society and all other stakeholders, we join hands so that we ensure we strengthen the substance abuse awareness and ensure rehabilitation centres have effective programmes that are community-based and that there are interventions from the communities.”
