The South African Police Union (SAPU) in Limpopo has condemned an attack on a police officer at Maake police station near Tzaneen, allegedly carried out by disgruntled residents.
According to SAPU, residents had visited the station to report a case but were advised to seek medical attention first due to the complainant’s injuries. The residents then allegedly attacked the officer on duty.
Limpopo SAPU secretary Lesiba Pukubye emphasised the need for strict action against those who assault police officers.
“The safety of police now rests upon our judicial cause, because now if one says the police must also retaliate, it is now given as a police retaliation.”
Pukubye said. “Our message to the court now is that when finding people guilty, they must give them a harsher sentence so that they could deter other people when they think of attacking the police.”
