SAPS take Operation Shanela 2 to Kagiso

The SA Police Service has taken Operation Shanela 2 to the streets of Kagiso, west of Johannesburg, on Thursday morning.

The coordinated, intelligence-driven campaign aims to curb and prevent violent crime in the country.

Police say these efforts will continue ahead of and throughout the festive season, as police intensify the fight against crime.

The operation included several law enforcement agencies as well as officials from the Department of Home Affairs.

Police say they will continue high-visibility patrols, stop-and-go-searches, compliance checks and the tracing of wanted suspects, in the coming months across the country.

Gauteng Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Fred Kekana, says they have recovered two hijacked vehicles during the operation.

“We have started this operation earlier on in the morning. So far, we have arrested about 23 people, including the ones who have just been arrested at the roadblock for the stolen vehicle. The people that were arrested this morning are 16 undocumented people.”

Kekana adds: “We have got illegal mining and two possessions of gold-bearing material. Earlier in the morning, we have recovered vehicles, one that was hijacked yesterday at Boshkop and the one at Protea Glen and we are continuing with these operations. We hope that criminals will be brought to book.”
