Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has condemned the alleged rape of a trainee by an instructor at the South African Police Service (SAPS) Training Academy in Pretoria, describing it as both a criminal act and an abuse of authority.
The incident reportedly occurred on Tuesday. The suspect has since been arrested and is expected to appear in court today.
Police confirmed that the trainee is receiving medical treatment and has been provided with emotional and psychological support services.
Minister Mchunu’s spokesperson, Kamogelo Mogotsi, said the incident is a violation of the police service’s core values.
“This incident stands in stark contrast to the values and ethics we expect of our officers. It undermines the integrity of the police service and the tireless work of the thousands of officers who serve with honour every day,” said Mogotsi.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has taken over the investigation.
Mogotsi added: “We urge them to leave no stone unturned in ensuring that justice is served.”
