A prison fence.
The Northern Cape High Court has sentenced a former South African National Defence Force (SANDF) soldier, Desmond Zwakala, to 20 years direct imprisonment for shooting and killing a Kimberley Boys High learner, Amogelang Assegai.
Zwakala resigned from the SANDF this morning after he was found guilty of killing the teenager yesterday.
19-year-old Assegai was gunned down in October 2022 after Zwakala accused him of stealing his son’s cellphone.
Assegai’s sister, Reabetswe Seakeco says the past three years have been an emotional roller coaster for her family,
“There is no sentence that will make us feel happy. We feel to a certain extent justice has been served. I think it will bring healing. I think concluding this legal chapter is an important part of our process towards healing. We have been in and outside court for three years. Now we have closed the legal chapter and we can start to meaningfully heal.”
