The Department of International Relations and Cooperation says South Africa has sent SANDF helicopters to help look for the missing Ekurhuleni MMC Andile Mngwevu, who has gone missing in Mozambique.
Mngwevu and three other people went missing in Chokwe, Mozambique, after their vehicle was swept away by floods.
The area has been affected by recent heavy rains, which also affected Limpopo and Mpumalanga.
One occupant of the vehicle has been found safe and is in contact with South African rescue teams, who are working alongside Mozambican authorities.
Dirco’s Spokesperson Clayson Monyela said, “The mission has also made contact with the only person that managed to get out of the vehicle at the time of the incident. It was established that there were five people in the vehicle; the status of the other four, which includes the MMC, is yet to be confirmed. We’ve also been told that the South African National Defence Force will send two Oryx helicopters to Mozambique to assist with search and rescue operations.”
