Soldiers on the ground in Gauteng
Members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) are expected to be deployed across parts of the Western Cape from Wednesday.
The deployment follows an announcement by President Cyril Ramaphosa during his State of the Nation Address in February.
SANDF members will be deployed to crime hotspots across the country, including areas in the Western Cape.
Provincial Police Commissioner Thembisile Patekile says the intervention is aimed at improving safety in areas affected by crime, particularly on the Cape Flats.
“It is our hope that with spheres of government embracing the deployment and the communities and all stakeholders, the challenges that are facing the gang-infested areas and communities, the extortion and the taxi violence, the proliferation of firearms in this area as a weapon of choice we’ve got to get rid of. We’ve got to find them,” says Patekile.
Authorities say the deployment will support ongoing efforts to address crime and stabilise affected communities.
