Members of SAMWU at a protest.
The South African Municipal Workers’ Union (SAMWU) in the Eastern Cape is marching to the Buffalo City Metro Municipality on Tuesday over issues affecting its members and the city.
The march aims to highlight alleged financial mismanagement, corruption within the metro, union-bashing and a breach of labour rights among other things.
The union says these issues have long plagued the municipality, negatively impacting service delivery to the community of Buffalo City.
“The bone of contention here is the attack on the collective agreement, especially sections 84-1A and 85 of labour relations, which talks about the consultation which has to happen between management and labour, which is not happening in Buffalo City. And some of the issues are the non-payment of the COVID and danger allowances, which is a long-standing issue which they promised to pay at the time there was COVID. There was a policy, everything was fine, they promised to pay, but again they came with stories that they don’t have money, citing that the municipality is under a financial recovery plan,” says SAMWU Provincial Secretary, Asamza Ntaka.
