1 minute

The South African Medical Association (SAMA) has expressed concern over anticipated emergency incidents due to increased alcohol consumption during the festive season.

The association has warned of adverse consequences of alcohol use, which include a high number of road traffic accidents during the season.

The Chairperson of SAMA, Dr Mvuyisi Mzukwa says, “We know at this time during the festive season in South Africa, alcohol consumption often increases due to celebrations, social gatherings and holiday events. But excessive drinking as we know during this time, can lead to several dangerous consequences both individually and also society at large. You would note the increase in road traffic accidents.  South Africa has one of the highest rates of alcohol related fatalities. Out of the 1 427 that we’ve seen in 2023, one- third of that is due to alcohol related incidents.”
