The South African Local Government Association (SALGA) says national government’s prompt intervention in under-performing municipalities is a step in the right direction.
SALGA believes that this will improve the delivery of basic services. President Cyril Ramaphosa announced in the State of the Nation Address that national government would not hesitate to intervene in failing municipalities.

SALGA president Bheke Stofile says the local government needs to be professionalised.
“But if you professionalise local government, you must cut the invisible hand that is an external hand that makes municipalities not to perform the duties that they have. So in that whole package it will be very good for him to lead from the front in cutting that invisible hand so that service delivery can be addressed.”
