SAHRC rejects Open Chats podcast’s apology

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) says it has received a myriad of complaints following a podcast where the presenters made derogatory remarks about the Coloured community.

The remarks have sparked widespread outrage. SAHRC’s chairperson, Chris Nissen has condemned the utterances.

“They’ve apologised, but we said no, you cannot do hate speech and racist comments and then apologise afterwards as if nothing happened. We’ve seen how people in this country have been taken to court for hate speech. They’ve paid both monetary and community service for it.  We say no apology is not enough. They must appear before the Commission, and the Commission as such is preparing the internal investigation together with the complaints that are there.”

Meanwhile, the Democratic Alliance (DA) and Patriotic Alliance (PA) announced they will report the matter to the Human Rights Commission.
