The South African Federation of Trade Unions (Saftu) has written to the Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Communications and Digital Technologies, requesting an urgent meeting regarding a recently gazetted policy directive for the ICT sector.
This follows Communications Minister Solly Malatsi’s announcement of proposed changes to the B-BBEE policies in the ICT sector.
These changes could allow companies to invest in the country without adhering to the 30% ownership regulation.
Malatsi has been summoned to appear before the portfolio committee tomorrow.
Saftu General-Secretary Zwelinzima Vavi says they view Malatsi’s move as government being played during last week’s meeting at the White House.
“We have just written a letter to the chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Communication and Digital Technologies to ask for an urgent discussion, so that we can raise with the committee our disgust and alarm that honourable Solly Malatsi is now pursuing actions that could potentially undermine South Africa’s established regulatory frameworks, including laws governing spectrum licensing, ownership requirements and data sovereignty.”
