Safety of Madlanga Inquiry witnesses remains a priority: Mosikili

Deputy National Commissioner for Policing, Tebello Mosikili, says the safety and security of witnesses testifying at the Madlanga Commission remains a priority.

She addressed a media briefing in Pretoria on Friday, where Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola announced the establishment of a new task team to investigate  South African Police Service (SAPS) members implicated in the commission.

Last year, one of the witnesses, Marius van der Merwe, also known as Witness D, was shot dead outside his home following his damning testimony against Ekurhuleni Metro Police officers before the inquiry.

Mosikili says everything is being done to protect the witnesses.

She says, “I must indicate that we are not waiting for an incident to occur to respond, but as and when the need arises, we call one another because it talks to the security issues, and we put measures in place to ensure witnesses are safe. People who want to come and testify before the commission, they will have to do that and we can assure that we can put safety measures to the best of our ability to the joint structure.”
