The South African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) has criticised the Basic Education Department for failing to implement recommendations made in 2014 by a task team headed by Prof. John Volmink on claims of ghost workers in public schools.
The union has welcomed the Education Labour Relations Council’s (ELRC) appointment to conduct the physical verification of educators and pupils in schools across all nine provinces to address these allegations.
Sadtu Spokesperson Nomusa Cembi says they are pinning their hopes on ELRC to root out this corruption that has been troubling the sector for a long time.
Cembi says, “We haven’t taken that long to have this matter addressed. In 2014, a Ministerial Task Team was set up headed by Professor Volmink and as Sadtu we testified before that Volmink Commission.”
She adds, “The recommendations were made but we do not know why the department has not done much to implement the recommendations from that. We believe that because the ELRC is the one tasked with doing this and not government officials who are already in the system will do proper verification.”
