SADAG says receiving spike in calls from anxious matriculants

The South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) is reporting a significant increase in calls from matriculants experiencing anxiety ahead of the release of their National Senior Certificate (NSC) examination results on Monday, 13 January.

The organisation says it is handling about 2 000 calls daily, many from learners struggling with overwhelming emotions as they await their results.

SADAG volunteer training coordinator Lebohang Mokoena highlights the importance of students seeking help during this time.

Mokoena says, “We are receiving a lot of calls from students. They are reaching out for help to say, you know, I’m feeling anxious, which is completely normal. We always say to them that it’s very good that you’re acknowledging how you’re feeling and having the courage to actually reach out for help. That takes a lot.”

He adds that SADAG is providing support to help learners process their emotions.

“We’re trying to help them navigate those emotions that they’re feeling at that time, you know, to say that, listen, it’s okay. If you’re not okay, and help is there. And just reach out and speak to someone about what you’re going through.”

SADAG continues to encourage matriculants to seek assistance if they feel overwhelmed during this period.
