Communications and Digital Technologies Minister Solly Malatsi has acknowledged concerns over the South African Broadcasting Corporation’s (SABC) financial sustainability, admitting that the cost of fulfilling its public mandate remains under-funded
He announces that the SABC will receive R 704 million over the Medium-Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF).
Malatsi has called on key stakeholders to play their part in safeguarding the future of the public broadcaster.
He says, “It’s going to take a series of actions from different players, us as the department and the ministry being the shareholders, is to provide the support for the SABC in engagements with National Treasury and to be able to persuade our colleagues about the mere fact.”
“One of the things, for instance, is that next year we will be having an election. All the political parties will have an expectation of being covered equitably so and to do that, and to pull it off, you’re going to need thorough resources,” he explains.
