The SABC has reliably learnt that Democratic Alliance (DA) leader John Steenhuisen will not be standing for re-election.
He is expected make the announcement at a media briefing in Durban on Wednesday, where he started his political career some 30 years ago.
Despite this development, the party’s Federal Chairperson Helen Zille denies any tension within party ranks.
Last month Dion George resigned from the party including his position as Member of Parliament and Shadow Minister.
He cited what he calls an intolerable environment, alleged capture of the party by the ANC, and a smear campaign led by Steenhuisen.
Tomorrow at 10am, I will make an announcement of national importance. Until you see me outlining the full set of facts tomorrow, avoid speculation. pic.twitter.com/IUCYhnLixj
