A resident of Saaiplaas at Virginia in the Free State has lamented her 18 years of struggle while living in a house surrounded by sewage.
Dikeledi Mokhosi says the situation has remained unchanged despite repeatedly reporting the issue to Matjhabeng Local Municipality.
Mokhosi says her family constantly suffers nosebleeds and that one of her children died in 2022 from asthma which she believes, was caused by the prevailing conditions.
She says the Human Rights Commission and the municipality once promised to relocate her, but nothing has happened. Mokhosi is pleading for urgent intervention.
“My kids are sick, they have asthma, one of my kids died, I had to bury him on the street while staying in this sewage. It is unbearable to stay in this house. I no longer even have wardrobes and the kitchen sink because there was an unbearable stench everywhere. I went everywhere asking for assistance,” says Mokhosi.
